Over the next few weeks we’re running a series of Spotlight interviews with the guest facilitators who will be hosting workshops at this year’s Dalkey Creates Festival. Today we’re catching up with Writer and Leading Irish Editor Anthony Glavin.
Antony has published two short story collections, two novels, and a "fair bit" of non-fiction. Anthony also works as a critic and freelance journalist, and is known as one of Ireland's leading and most eminent literary editors.
Q. What did you want to be when you were a child?
A. A firefighter, seeing as how the local fire station was just through a gap in the hedge at the back of our house.
Q. Do you have a routine in your creative practice?
A. I generally try to call it a day (or night) at a point where I know what the next line or two are likely to be, hopefully leaving enough in the well to prime the pump for the next day.
Q. Which work of art do you wish you had created?
A. I’d have loved to have painted any of American artist Edward Hopper works, not least his fabled Nighthawks.
Q. If you could give any advice to someone starting out on your path, what would it be?
A. Always carry a small notebook with you, as it beats scribbling down thoughts, lines, ideas, and dialogue onto napkins, envelopes, beer mats and other scraps.
Q. Who would you like to meet that you haven't already?
A. American novelist and nature writer Peter Matthiessen, although he passed away in 2014.
Q. What would you ask them?
A. It’s more what I’d like to tell him—how I was heart-broken to miss his reading years ago at the Irish Writers Centre, and how much I loved his work: not least his celebrated travel memoir The Snow Leopard.
Q. Which actor would play you in the film of your life?
A. Methinks Sam Elliott, whose moustachioed cowboy character in The Big Lebowski has prompted a dear friend & fellow writer to mistakenly address me as Sam more than once!?
Anthony will be running a workshop called 'Bringing the short story home' on Sunday October 22nd from 10am-1pm in Harold Boys' School.
