Over the next few weeks we’re running a series of Spotlight interviews with the guest facilitators who will be will hosting workshops at this year’s Dalkey Creates Festival.
Today we caught up with international Storyteller Catherine Brophy. Catherine has published the novels The Liberation of Margaret Mc Cabe, Dark Paradise and most recently Burning Bright and Gigolos for Jesus (short stories). She wrote for Fair City for nine years and edited it for one. She has also written for Sunday Miscellany and has appeared on the panel of the Arts Show with John Kelly.
Q. What did you want to be when you were a child?
I hadn’t a notion…. But I was thrilled when the teacher read my essays out to the class and, for that reason, lavished time and care on writing them.
Q. Do you have a routine in your creative practice?
I write every day and I walk every day. I think of the walk as time for my imagination to work behind the scenes without me having to do anything about it. I use e-mails and letters as practice for writing… so I edit them for clarity and to delete unnecessary verbiage.
Q. Which work of art do you wish you had created?
I’m much more interested in making what I write as good as I can. But… if I’d produced Beloved by Toni Morrison, Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant, Lonesome Dove by Larry Mc Murtry, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston… I’d be so pleased with myself that I’d be insufferable!
Q. If you could give any advice to someone starting out on your path, what would it be?
The first draft is always hideous… it happens to us all. You might feel like giving up but don’t, because now you have something to work on.
Q. Who would you like to meet that you haven't already?
Q. What would you ask them?
May I kiss your feet?
Q. Which actor would play you in the film of your life?
It has to be Meryl Streep because she can do anything.
Catherine Brophy will be hosting a workshop on Saturday 21st October, 10am - 1pm in the Magpie Inn, Dalkey. The workshop is called Good Stories Make Good Business and the aim is to help business people find an engaging way to attract new customers and keep the old ones.
